Did you log out of Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, or Threads? You’re not by yourself.
Users were reported to have logged out entirely from their Meta services accounts at roughly 10 p.m. The fact that apparently no one was able to use Meta’s services soon made it clear that this was a widespread problem.
The real-time outage monitoring website DownDetector showed that close to 400,000 users were reporting problems with Facebook. All services had resumed around midnight.
Trying to reset your password or log in during the outage resulted in an error message saying “An Unknown Error Has Occurred.” Even two-factor authentication failed; although the code was sent, there was never an entry prompt.
“We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted,” Meta communications spokesperson Andy Stone wrote in a post, blaming “a technical issue” and adding that it “caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services.” “We apologize for any inconvenience,” Stone wrote.
Incredibly, despite numerous reports to the contrary, Meta’s status page, which monitors the state of the company’s services, revealed “major disruptions” to Ads Manager, Facebook & Instagram Shops, Meta Business Suite, WhatsApp Business API, and Messenger API, but “no known issues” for Messenger. When noon arrived, every service was “recovering from an outage.”
Early speculation is that Meta identity and access management may be the source, as all downed systems rely on Meta for login. As of now, no significant DDoS attacks or real network outages have been reported. A flawed configuration update resulted in a similar circumstance in 2021.
What is DDOS attacks?
An intentional attempt to obstruct regular activity on a server, service, or network by flooding the target or its surrounding infrastructure with excessive amounts of Internet traffic is known as a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assault.
The efficacy of DDoS attacks arises from their ability to use numerous compromised computer systems as sources of attack traffic. Computers and other networked resources, such Internet of Things devices, might be considered exploited machines.
A DDoS attack can be compared, at a high level, to an unforeseen traffic congestion that blocks the highway and keeps ordinary traffic from reaching its destination.
