Snap Unveils Fifth Generation Spectacles: A Breakthrough in AR Technology
Snap Inc. has introduced the fifth generation of its Spectacles, innovative see-through AR glasses that revolutionize how users interact with both the digital and real worlds. These standalone glasses allow users to enjoy augmented reality through Lenses, creating new ways to engage with friends and surroundings. Powered by Snap OS, the company’s cutting-edge operating system, Spectacles are now available as part of the Spectacles Developer Program.
Designed with integration in mind, Spectacles seamlessly pair with mobile devices via the Spectacles app. Users can transform their phone into a custom game controller, launch Spectator Mode for non-Spectacles users, and even mirror their phone screen.
High-Tech Innovation in Lightweight Hardware
The fifth generation Spectacles represents over a decade of R&D, blending advanced technology into lightweight, 226-gram glasses. Equipped with four cameras and the Snap Spatial Engine, the AR glasses provide hand tracking and real-time interaction with the environment. The proprietary Optical Engine and LCoS micro-projectors deliver vivid images with automatic tinting, adapting seamlessly to different lighting conditions.
Spectacles feature a 46-degree diagonal field of view with a sharp 37-pixel-per-degree resolution. They are powered by a dual-system architecture with two Snapdragon processors, maximizing performance and power efficiency, offering 45 minutes of continuous runtime.
Snap OS: Natural Interactions and Shared Experiences
Snap OS brings the Spectacles to life with intuitive hand and voice control. The Snap Spatial Engine renders Lenses in 3D with just 13 milliseconds of latency, ensuring realistic integration with the user’s environment. Built with social interaction in mind, Snap OS allows developers to create shared AR experiences for friends and family.
A Developer-Friendly Platform with Enhanced Tools
Snap is committed to supporting developers with new tools and no developer fees. Lens Studio 5.0 enables seamless Lens creation for Spectacles, while the Spectacles Interaction Kit simplifies the process. With TypeScript, JavaScript, and cloud-hosted multimodal AI models powered by OpenAI, developers can build sophisticated AR experiences.
Partnering with Industry Leaders
Snap has partnered with leading brands to create unique AR experiences for Spectacles. LEGO Group’s BRICKTACULAR, an interactive AR game controlled by hand and voice, debuts alongside content from ILM Immersive from Lucasfilm, Niantic, and Wabisabi Games.
